Reading Your Prescription

Sphere

Main lens power. Minus (−) = short-sighted. Plus (+) = long-sighted.

CYL

Cylinder

Measures astigmatism — blurring from an irregularly shaped cornea.

AXIS

Axis Angle

Direction of astigmatism correction. A number from 1° to 180°.

ADD

Reading Addition

Extra power for reading. Used in bifocals & progressives. Common 40+.

e.g. +1.50

PD

Pupillary Distance

Distance (mm) between pupils. Always ask your optometrist for this!

e.g. 64 mm

OD/OS

Right / Left Eye

OD = right eye (oculus dexter). OS = left eye (oculus sinister).
